New hair for the new season?

There’s really no perfect time to get a new look or even to set some new hair goals. I mean... you can just do this whenever you want. Yup, not just for the holidays or the new year, or just for your birthday or even a new job…you can choose any random Thursday in any month and book a hair appointment or start a new regimen to a healthy hair journey. We all know about those impulsive urges or frustrating hair days that forces us to want or do something new... you know... to switch it up!

While I 100% get it, because I’m guilty of it ... I implore you... to stop and think about it. Let’s try and swerve that big ‘OH NO” … that instant regret that we feel immediately after the change. Do some research or get a consultation from a licensed professional The Beautisserie , and if you do neither, try an affordable temporary change/style like a wig or braids or extensions (yea I know these went up too… but the focus is on TEM PO RARY).

Temporary Style:

Taking a break from my short cut with a Quick weave bob.

There’s no way to know if you really love the new hairstyle until you actually get it…However, the goal here is to see if you really want to change your current style or are you just bored and need a quick switch for a few days/weeks. If this is the case, I promise you, you may enjoy the new style while you have it …but you’ll miss your hair, your “look” …in just a matter of DAYS. Although at times you may really want or need the change... SOMETIMES your hair just doesn’t look or feel right because you didn’t wake up in the best mood or your eyebrows weren’t done right today. SOMETIMES, you just need to buy yourself something nice, like a new pair of shoes. Yup... SOMETIMES it’s those damn hormones. Don’t let ‘em getchya! You’ll wake up the next day, googling steps on how to reverse or live through the decision you made the day before. Not to mention if you did the “new look” yourself... at home... during the week ...at 7:53pm forcing you to manic scroll on Instagram until 2am in the morning to book an appointment, with the ONLY stylist you could find that had availability the next day or even in that week!  So instead of a new look, you may just need to work on your hair regimen and put a little more time into maintaining that feel good, trendy but healthy hair journey. This may include throwing out some of those old hair products you’ve had since…well you know… and adding/UPGRADING to some of the products I’m including in this blog for you.

However, let’s say you’ve been thinking about this new look, asked all the questions about a particular cut or color and can’t stop thinking about it. Then go ahead, make the appointment. Just know that whether you are growing out a short cut, getting a new haircut, a new hair color, getting a chemical straightener, or even going bald, you need to consider the maintenance and if it’s the right choice for your lifestyle, preference and of course budget. Yup, no matter your style, texture or length… if you’re the type that’s into a healthy, groomed and somewhat trendy look... you’ve got some work to do or some appointments to make. Here’s what I mean…. short haircuts and bobs may be easy to style but will grow out from the desired length in no time, so my advice by the way: Go a little shorter so you can enjoy the style a bit longer, before it’s time to get a haircut again.  That new hair color may now require some additional quality at home products, like #ad shampoos and treatments for color treated hair; opt for a color that doesn’t fade easily if you’re that babe that washes every week or more. Some of you with short cuts keep frying the 2-3 inches of hair on your head, and you need a “proppa” #ad iron like this one from Red by Kiss to make sure you DON’T go crazy with the heat. To be safe, choose a ceramic iron… In my opinion and observation, ceramic irons distribute heat more evenly and are also safer for at home use, especially for you ladies that looooove turning it all the way up to 450.

Always Choose a flat iron with a temperature adjustment. This one I recommend If you’re not trying to spend too much on a flat iron.

So, tell me…one of these scenarios yours? Awesome… the key thing to remember is the decision to start a new regimen OR the investment you made in getting that new look, deserves the right at home care and you don’t have to break the bank to do it. So whatever direction you choose, I hope you take away from this … that fabulous hair takes some time and work and it’s important to choose a style within your budget.

Now, here’s some basic products you should be upgrading to for at home maintenance.

Starting with a good ol’ shower cap! I can’t believe so many girlies are hopping in the shower without basic protection. How do you hate the shower cap and also hate what the shower does to your hair?? Please please please get a #adshower cap Even if it’s the clear disposable ones. Gift your family and friends too cause apparently, we stopped using shower caps!! Trust me, unless you wear your hair curly or want steamy styled hair, you need to use to a shower cap... every day.

Hair wraps and scarves (or doo-rags since some of you still like and use those) are essential to maintaining your style throughout the week. And not just your style... its purpose is really to protect your hairline as well as the ends of your hair from all the flips and turns you do in your sleep. YES, I know... some of you have a silk pillowcase... but guess what...  unless you are laying still the entire night it’s probably not enough! Your hair is still gonna move and might get scrunched, especially if you are a busy sleeper or even if you sweat at nights. Silk (maybe satin) scarves are best. And although very effective…. be mindful of Satin-like OR Silky named scarves that are mainly polyester based, this is a “not so cool’’ material and may cause you to sweat. However girl, if it works for you… keep on… keeping it on. If you are ready to upgrade…YOU NEED to get a #ad mulberry Silk Scarf.

Scarf Tip

The bigger the scarf, the better the coverage. Get the 43” scarf… you’ll be able to tie it nicely as a hair accessory for bad hair days!

My final suggestion is your hot tool, and my only recommendation for #adheat styling tools is to be sure you can control that temperature. My heat styling tools link will give you a few options to suit the length of your hair and your budget. Forward to your girls so they can toss out their old flat iron and get an upgrade too! Remember, what works for me won’t necessarily work for you, so when styling, drying, ironing, start low and increase the temperature as you need to. The goal is to achieve a smooth, soft, shiny finish, if it starts to feel crispy…you’ve gone too far, and you now need to make another appointment for a trim/haircut.
